Tangier: The Gateway to Africa
Your journey begins in Tangier, one of the most storied and cosmopolitan cities in the Arab world. Perched at the point where the Mediterranean meets the Atlantic and Europe faces Africa across the Strait of Gibraltar, Tangier has drawn artists, writers, diplomats and adventurers for centuries. Paul Bowles lived here for fifty years. Matisse came for the light. The Rolling Stones recorded here. Tangier carries its history lightly, with a medina that feels genuinely lived-in, a gallery scene that punches well above the city's size, and a waterfront that is among the most atmospheric in North Africa. Two nights allow enough time to move past the surface and into the real city.
Experiences may include:
Private introductory walk through the medina, exploring the maze-like streets, colourful souks, artisan workshops and quiet residential quarters away from the tourist trail
Private food tour through Tangier's markets and street food scene, tracing the city's unique blend of Moroccan, Andalusian and Mediterranean culinary influences
Private art gallery tour, visiting the spaces that carry on Tangier's long tradition as a destination for artists and creative thinkers
Exploration of the Grand Socco and Petit Socco, the two great squares that have served as the social heart of Tangier for centuries
Time to explore the city independently, discovering its cafes, bookshops and coastal promenade at your own pace
Tangier rewards the curious traveller. Its layers of history, culture and creative energy make it one of the most surprising and genuinely compelling cities in Morocco.
Chefchaouen & the Rif Mountains: The Blue Pearl of Morocco
From Tangier, your journey continues into the Rif Mountains and the town that has captivated travelers more than perhaps any other in Morocco. Founded in 1471 as a fortress to protect against Portuguese invasions, Chefchaouen's distinctive blue-washed walls, introduced by Jewish refugees in the 1930s, have become one of the most photographed streetscapes on earth. But Chefchaouen is far more than its colour. It sits at the heart of the Rif Mountains with hiking trails, cedar forests and natural wonders that most visitors never reach, and its medina has a calm, unhurried character entirely its own.
Experiences may include:
Private transfer from Tangier to Chefchaouen through the Rif Mountains, with optional stops along the way
Guided hike from Akchour through the picturesque valley of the Rif Mountains to God's Bridge, a 100-metre natural rock formation of extraordinary beauty, following a trail that crosses small bridges, passes waterholes and winds through one of Morocco's most dramatic natural landscapes
Private exploration of Chefchaouen's blue-washed medina with a local guide, discovering artisan shops, woven blanket makers, leather goods and pottery
Time to wander the medina independently, exploring its quieter residential streets and rooftop cafes
The pace of Chefchaouen is unlike anywhere else in Morocco. The mountain air, the blue light and the unhurried rhythm of the town make these two nights among the most restorative of the entire journey.
Fes: The Spiritual & Cultural Heart of Morocco
Fes is the reason this itinerary exists. As the largest urban car-free UNESCO World Heritage Site in the world, Fes el Bali preserves Morocco's traditions with an intensity and authenticity that no other city can match. It is the spiritual heart of Morocco and of North Africa, a living labyrinth of ancient streets, grand madrasas, bustling souks and artisans practicing crafts that have been passed down through generations for over a thousand years. Three nights allow enough time to move through Fes slowly and with genuine depth, which is the only way to truly experience it.
Experiences may include:
Private introductory walking tour from the Andalusian quarter through the honeycomb alleys of the medina, visiting the iconic Chouara Tannery from a panoramic terrace, the Al Quaraouiyine Mosque and the monumental blue-tiled arch of Bab Bou Jeloud
Private guided tour of the Al-Attarine Madrasa, a jewel of Marinid architecture, and the Bou Inania Madrasa, with its extraordinary cedar woodwork and zellige tilework
Visit to the University of Al Quaraouiyine, founded in 859 AD and recognised as the world's oldest continually operating university
Private visit to the Nejjarine Museum of Wooden Arts and Crafts, housed in a beautifully restored 18th-century caravanserai with a rooftop terrace overlooking the medina
Visit to a traditional zellij workshop, where master artisans hand-cut intricate mosaic tiles using techniques unchanged for centuries
Private craft and street food tour of the medina, visiting tanneries, leather boutiques, brass workers, wood artisans and pastry stalls serving traditional Maaqouda, Chebbakiya and Briwates
Each day in Fes reveals something that the previous day did not. The city rewards patience and genuine curiosity above all else, and a private guide transforms what might otherwise be an overwhelming experience into one of the most memorable of the entire journey.
Rabat: Morocco's Elegant Imperial Capital
Your journey south from Fes passes through some of Morocco's most historically significant landscapes before arriving in the country's elegant capital. En route, a full day excursion takes in Meknes, one of Morocco's four imperial cities built by Sultan Moulay Ismail in the 17th century as a rival to Versailles, and the Roman ruins of Volubilis, among the finest and most evocative in the world. The day ends with a private winery visit in the surrounding region before continuing to Rabat.
Rabat carries its imperial heritage with a quiet elegance that stands in contrast to the intensity of Fes and the energy of Marrakech. Founded by the Almohads in the 12th century, the city layers Roman, medieval Islamic and French colonial architecture in a way that rewards the attentive visitor.
Experiences may include:
Private guided tour of Meknes, visiting the monumental Bab Mansour gate, the vast Heri es-Souani granaries and the Mausoleum of Moulay Ismail
Private guided tour of Volubilis, the UNESCO-listed Roman ruins with extraordinary intact mosaics, triumphal arches and colonnaded streets
Private visit to a local winery in the Meknes region with a tasting of Moroccan wines paired with local produce
Private guided walk through Rabat's tranquil medina and the Kasbah of the Udayas, a 12th-century fortress with Andalusian gardens and sweeping ocean views
Private visit to the Hassan Tower and the magnificent Mausoleum of Mohammed V
Bike tour through Rabat's wide boulevards, coastal paths and historic neighbourhoods
Rabat offers a pace and character entirely its own. The combination of imperial history, Roman heritage and coastal elegance makes it one of the quiet highlights of the entire journey.
Casablanca: Art Deco, the Hassan II Mosque & the Atlantic
Your final stop is Morocco's largest city and its commercial capital, a place of Art Deco boulevards, contemporary galleries and one of the most extraordinary pieces of architecture in the world. The Hassan II Mosque, completed in 1993, stands on a promontory above the Atlantic Ocean and is the largest mosque in Africa and the seventh largest in the world. Its minaret rises 210 metres into the sky and is visible from the sea. A private visit here, with a specialist guide who can illuminate both the architecture and the spiritual significance of the site, is one of the most memorable experiences available anywhere in Morocco.
Experiences may include:
Private guided visit to the Hassan II Mosque, with access to the main prayer hall and its extraordinary carved cedar ceiling, marble floors and retractable roof
Walking tour of Casablanca's Art Deco district, one of the finest collections of Art Deco architecture outside Europe, built during the French Protectorate period
Lunch at one of Casablanca's finest seafood restaurants on the Corniche, overlooking the Atlantic
Casablanca is the perfect final chapter for this journey. It is a city that looks outward toward the Atlantic and the wider world, and leaving from here feels entirely fitting after ten days moving through the deep interior of Morocco's most storied north.
