Luxury Private Tours in ECUADOR
The most biodiverse country on earth. The islands that changed how we understand life. Four worlds in the size of a small country.
Our tailor-made private tours combine expert local naturalist guides, handpicked boutique lodges and curated experiences, from a private cruise through the extraordinary Galápagos Islands and a luxury lodge deep in the Amazon to horseback riding on the Andean páramo, hiking the Avenue of the Volcanoes, the colonial grandeur of Quito and the extraordinary indigenous market of Otavalo.
WHY VISIT ECUADOR?
Ecuador is the most biodiverse country on earth per square kilometre, a nation the size of Colorado that contains within its borders four entirely distinct ecosystems, the Pacific coast, the Andean highlands with their avenue of volcanoes, the cloud forests of the western and eastern slopes and the Amazon basin, as well as the most extraordinary archipelago in the natural world one thousand kilometres offshore in the Pacific Ocean. The Galápagos Islands, where Charles Darwin spent five weeks in 1835 and observed the specific variations in species that formed the foundation of the theory of natural selection, are the reason Ecuador appears on more serious travellers' lists than any other destination in South America.
What makes Ecuador exceptional for the private traveller is the combination of extraordinary natural access and remarkable compactness. The country is small enough to move between entirely different ecosystems in a single day, from the Andean páramo at four thousand metres to the cloud forest at two thousand metres to the Amazon lowlands in a single morning's drive and a short flight. The Galápagos, where the wildlife has evolved in the complete absence of terrestrial predators and therefore has no fear of humans, allowing an intimacy with wild animals that is available nowhere else on earth, can be reached in two hours from the mainland. A private Ecuador journey combining all four mainland ecosystems with a Galápagos cruise is one of the most complete natural history experiences available anywhere in the world.
Many travellers combine Ecuador with Peru for a broader Andean journey, or with Colombia for those designing a comprehensive northern South America circuit.

Best Time to Visit ECUADOR
June to September is the dry season in the Galápagos and our most recommended window for a first Ecuador journey. The seas are cooler and rougher, driven by the Humboldt Current, which brings the extraordinary marine life to the surface and produces the finest snorkelling and diving conditions of the year. The penguin and sea lion populations are at their most active. On the mainland, the Andean highlands are at their clearest and the mountain views are exceptional.
December to May is the warm season in the Galápagos, when the seas are calmer and the water is warmer and clearer. The sea turtle nesting season peaks between January and March and the marine iguana colonies are at their most active. The waved albatross arrives on Española Island in April and remains through December in one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in the archipelago. This is also the wet season on the Ecuadorian mainland, when the cloud forests and the Amazon are at their most extraordinary and the waterfalls of the Andes are at their most powerful.
Year-round for the Amazon, which maintains its extraordinary biodiversity regardless of season. The wet season from December to May brings higher water levels that allow boat access to areas inaccessible in the dry season. The dry season from June to November makes the forest trails more accessible and the wildlife more concentrated around the rivers and lakes.
Quito and the Andes are accessible year-round. The dry season from June to September offers the clearest mountain views and the finest conditions for highland hiking and horseback riding. The shoulder months of April and October offer excellent conditions with fewer visitors.
DISCOVER ECUADOR’S REGIONS
From the extraordinary living laboratory of the Galápagos Islands and the colonial grandeur of Quito to the volcanic highlands of the Andes, the extraordinary cloud forests, the biodiversity of the Amazon basin and the UNESCO-listed colonial city of Cuenca, each region of Ecuador offers a completely distinct private journey.
QUITO: THE CITY AT THE TOP OF THE WORLD
Quito, the highest capital city in the world at 2,850 metres and a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the finest colonial cities in the Americas, a centre of extraordinary baroque churches, convents and plazas that carry the accumulated culture of the Spanish colonial project in the Andes. A private Quito experience moves between the extraordinary La Compañía church, whose gilded baroque interior is considered one of the finest in South America, the covered market of the Mercado Central and the specific neighbourhoods of the old city that carry the living culture of the city most honestly.
THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS: WHERE EVOLUTION IS VISIBLE
The Galápagos archipelago, one thousand kilometres off the Pacific coast of Ecuador, is the most extraordinary natural destination on earth, an archipelago of volcanic islands where the wildlife has evolved in the complete absence of terrestrial predators and therefore has no fear of human visitors. The giant tortoises that can live for over a hundred and fifty years, the marine iguanas that are the only sea-going lizards in the world, the blue-footed boobies whose courtship dance is one of the most extraordinary wildlife spectacles in the Americas and the sea lions that sleep on the pathways and swim alongside snorkellers with complete indifference are all experiences that exist nowhere else on the planet.
THE ANDES: THE AVENUE OF THE VOLCANOES
The Andean highlands of Ecuador contain the highest concentration of active volcanoes in the world, the Avenue of the Volcanoes that Alexander von Humboldt named in 1802, where Cotopaxi, Chimborazo and a chain of peaks above five thousand metres line both sides of the inter-Andean valley from Quito south to Cuenca. The páramo, the high-altitude grassland ecosystem above the tree line that is found only in the tropical Andes, supports a specific biodiversity of extraordinary interest and provides some of the finest horseback riding and hiking available in South America.
THE CLOUD FOREST: THE MOST BIODIVERSE ECOSYSTEM ON EARTH
The cloud forests of Ecuador's western and eastern Andean slopes are the most biodiverse ecosystems on earth per unit area, supporting more species of birds, orchids, bromeliads and amphibians within a single hectare than most countries contain in their entirety. The Mindo cloud forest on the western slopes is the finest accessible birding destination in Ecuador and one of the finest in the world. The eastern cloud forest lodges, perched in the transition zone between the Andes and the Amazon, offer a wildlife experience of extraordinary variety and intimacy.
THE AMAZON: THE LUNGS OF THE EARTH
The Ecuadorian Amazon, accessed from the gateway town of Coca or from the extraordinary Napo Wildlife Center deep in the Yasuní National Park, is one of the finest and most accessible Amazon experiences in South America. The Yasuní National Park, which UNESCO has designated a World Biosphere Reserve, contains the highest recorded biodiversity on earth and supports indigenous communities including the extraordinary Huaorani people who have been living in the forest for thousands of years. A private luxury lodge experience in the Ecuadorian Amazon, with specialist naturalist guides and a focus on the specific ecology of one of the most complex ecosystems on earth, is one of the finest wildlife experiences available in South America.
CUENCA: THE COLONIAL JEWEL OF THE ANDES
Cuenca is the finest colonial city in Ecuador and one of the most beautiful in South America, a UNESCO World Heritage town of cobblestone streets, magnificent domed cathedral and the extraordinary flower and food markets that reflect the specific agricultural culture of the southern Andes. The hat-making tradition of the region, which produces the finest Panama hats in the world despite the misleading name, the extraordinary ceramics of the surrounding villages and the specific food culture of a city that has been producing extraordinary traditional cooking for four centuries make Cuenca one of the most rewarding and most undervisited destinations in Ecuador.
Signature Experiences in ECUADOR
Ecuador rewards those who go beyond the Galápagos alone and allow a private guide to reveal the full extraordinary range of a country that contains four entirely distinct ecosystems within a few hours of each other. From a private cruise through the living laboratory of the Galápagos and a luxury Amazon lodge to horseback riding on the Andean páramo and the extraordinary indigenous market of Otavalo, these are the moments we build every Ecuador journey around.
PRIVATE CRUISE THROUGH THE GALÁPAGOS ISLANDS
A private yacht through the Galápagos, moving between the islands at your own pace and visiting the landing sites at the hours when the light and the wildlife conditions are finest, is the only way to experience the most extraordinary archipelago on earth properly. The difference between a shared cruise with a fixed schedule and a private vessel that can anchor overnight at the finest sites and respond to the specific wildlife behaviour of each day is the difference between a wildlife holiday and one of the most genuinely extraordinary natural history experiences available anywhere.
GIANT TORTOISES AND LAVA FIELDS
The giant tortoises of the Galápagos, which can live for over a hundred and fifty years and reach weights of over two hundred and fifty kilograms, are the most iconic residents of the archipelago and the ones whose specific story, near extinction and extraordinary recovery, gives the Galápagos conservation programme its most immediately moving expression. A private visit to the tortoise reserves of Santa Cruz or Isabela, combined with a walk through the extraordinary lava tube fields and the marine iguana colonies of the volcanic coast, gives the Galápagos landscape its full geological and biological dimension.
COLONIAL TOUR OF QUITO
Quito's historic centre, the largest and best-preserved colonial city centre in the Americas, carries five centuries of history in the extraordinary baroque churches whose gilded interiors reflect the specific wealth and the specific ambition of the Spanish colonial project in the Andes. A private morning with a specialist guide who can explain the specific history of the La Compañía church, the Convent of San Francisco and the covered passages of the old city, followed by a market lunch in the Mercado Central, gives Quito the depth and the cultural context that a self-guided visit cannot provide.
HORSEBACK RIDING IN THE ANDES
The Andean páramo, the extraordinary high-altitude grassland above the tree line where the condors circle above the volcanic peaks and the specific silence of the highlands is broken only by the wind, is best experienced on horseback in the tradition of the huasipungeros and the hacienda culture that shaped the Ecuadorian highlands for four centuries. A private horseback ride through the páramo below Cotopaxi or Chimborazo, with a guide from one of the highland haciendas who knows the specific trails and the specific behaviour of the Andean horses bred for this altitude, is one of the most specifically Ecuadorian experiences available anywhere in the country.
AMAZON LODGE STAY
A luxury lodge deep in the Ecuadorian Amazon, accessible only by motorised canoe along the river channels of the Napo or the Yasuní, puts you in the centre of the most biodiverse ecosystem on earth in conditions of genuine comfort and extraordinary naturalist access. The pre-dawn walk with a specialist guide who can locate the specific species active at each hour of the morning, the canopy platform that puts you above the forest at the level where the birds and the monkeys are most active and the specific night walk that reveals the extraordinary nocturnal biodiversity of the Amazon floor combine into a wildlife experience of genuine scientific depth and genuine emotional impact.
SNORKELLING AND DIVING IN THE GALÁPAGOS
The waters around the Galápagos Islands contain the most extraordinary marine ecosystem in the Pacific Ocean, where the convergence of the cold Humboldt Current and the warm Panama Current creates conditions that support marine life of extraordinary diversity and extraordinary density. Swimming alongside Galápagos sea lions, sea turtles, marine iguanas, hammerhead sharks, whale sharks and the extraordinary variety of reef fish that inhabit the volcanic underwater formations requires a private vessel that can position you at the right site at the right state of the tide, and a naturalist guide who knows the specific underwater geography of each island.
HIKING THE ANDES
The hiking available in the Ecuadorian Andes, from the cloud forest trails of the western slopes to the high-altitude páramo routes above the tree line and the extraordinary crater walks of the active volcanoes, is among the most varied and most rewarding in South America. A private guided ascent of the Pichincha volcano above Quito, a hike through the crater of the Quilotoa lagoon or a multi-day traverse of the páramo below Chimborazo, each requires a specialist guide who knows the specific conditions of the highland weather and the specific route that offers the finest combination of landscape and wildlife.
INDIGENOUS MARKETS OF OTAVALO
The Otavalo market, held every Saturday in the indigenous town of the same name two hours north of Quito, is the largest and most extraordinary indigenous market in South America, a weekly gathering of the Otavaleño people whose weaving tradition has been producing textiles of extraordinary quality and symbolic richness for centuries. A private market day combining the specific textile stalls where the finest work is sold by the families who produced it, the animal market where the agricultural life of the Andean community is most honestly expressed and a visit to one of the weaving workshops in the surrounding villages gives the Otavalo experience a depth that the standard tourist visit cannot approach.
FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS ABOUT TRAVELLING TO ECUADOR
-
Ecuador has undergone a significant security transformation in recent years, and the government has implemented substantial measures to improve safety for both residents and visitors. The country's most popular luxury travel destinations — the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon basin, the Andean highlands, and the colonial city of Quito — maintain a strong record of welcoming international visitors, and the vast majority of travellers experience their journeys without incident.
As with any destination, context and planning matter enormously. Our Ecuador itineraries are designed from the ground up with security and comfort in mind — selecting the finest and most trusted properties, coordinating private airport transfers at every stage, and ensuring expert local guides accompany you throughout. Our specialists provide thorough pre-departure briefings tailored specifically to your itinerary, so you travel with complete confidence from the moment you arrive.
-
Neither US nor UK citizens currently require a visa to enter Ecuador for tourist stays. Both nationalities are granted visa-free entry for up to 90 days, making Ecuador one of the most straightforward entry processes in South America. The process is handled on arrival, and no advance authorisation is currently required.
We recommend ensuring your passport carries at least six months' validity beyond your intended travel dates. Entry requirements can change, and our specialists confirm all documentation requirements as a standard part of your bespoke itinerary planning process. For those planning to visit the Galápagos Islands, a Transit Control Card — purchased on arrival in mainland Ecuador — is required in addition to a valid passport, and a national park entry fee is payable on arrival in the islands.
-
The Galápagos Islands are one of the world's most extraordinary natural destinations — a remote volcanic archipelago in the Pacific Ocean, 1,000 kilometres off the coast of Ecuador, where evolution proceeded in near-total isolation for millions of years. The result is a wildlife experience unlike anything else on earth: giant tortoises that can live for over 170 years, marine iguanas — the world's only seagoing lizard — blue-footed boobies performing their iconic courtship dance, Galápagos sea lions that approach within touching distance, and penguins swimming at the equator.
For luxury travellers, the Galápagos rewards in every direction. A private or small-group luxury expedition cruise aboard a premium yacht combines the freedom to explore multiple islands with exceptional guiding, outstanding cuisine, and the intimacy of a vessel designed for a small number of guests. Combined with snorkelling alongside whale sharks, hammerhead sharks, and manta rays in waters of extraordinary clarity, the Galápagos delivers a wildlife and marine encounter that belongs on every serious traveller's list. It is, unequivocally, worth every hour of the journey.
-
Ecuador, Peru, and Colombia each offer a distinct and genuinely compelling luxury travel experience, and many of our clients choose to combine two or all three on a broader Andean or Latin American journey. Ecuador's defining advantage is concentration — in a country the size of Nevada, you can experience the Galápagos Islands, the Amazon rainforest, the Avenue of the Volcanoes, and the UNESCO-listed colonial centre of Quito within a single, seamlessly crafted itinerary. No other country in South America offers such extraordinary diversity in such a compact geography.
Peru leads on archaeological heritage — Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and Cusco are among the world's great cultural destinations — and Lima's restaurant scene has established it as one of the world's premier culinary cities. Colombia brings Cartagena's Caribbean grandeur, the Coffee Region's lush green landscapes, and Medellín's remarkable cultural renaissance. For first-time visitors to the region seeking a destination that delivers maximum variety and impact in a single journey, Ecuador — anchored by the Galápagos — is often the most compelling starting point.
-
We recommend a minimum of 10 to 14 nights to experience Ecuador's signature destinations without feeling rushed. A well-crafted itinerary might open with two nights in Quito — exploring the UNESCO-listed colonial centre, the markets of Otavalo, and the dramatic landscape of the Avenue of the Volcanoes — before continuing to a private luxury lodge in the Amazon basin for two to three nights of wildlife immersion, then concluding with five to seven nights in the Galápagos aboard a premium expedition yacht.
For those wishing to add the cloud forests of Mindo — one of the world's premier birdwatching destinations with over 500 species recorded — the dramatic crater lake of Quilotoa, or a stay on a working hacienda in the Andean highlands, extending to 16–18 nights allows each experience the depth it deserves. Ecuador is a country that rewards slow travel, and its rewards are proportional to the time invested. Our specialists design every itinerary around your interests, pace, and definition of luxury.

Ecuador's remarkable concentration of extraordinary destinations within a compact geography is one of its greatest strengths as a luxury travel destination. The Galápagos Islands are the undisputed centrepiece — a wildlife experience of global significance best explored aboard a private or small-group luxury expedition yacht. Quito, Ecuador's capital, is one of the best-preserved colonial cities in the Americas — its UNESCO-listed historic centre, dramatic Andean setting, and thriving restaurant and arts scene make it one of South America's most underrated urban destinations.
The Amazon basin — best explored from a private luxury lodge in the Napo Wildlife Center, Sacha Lodge, or La Selva — offers an immersive rainforest experience combining exceptional wildlife encounters, expert guiding, and genuine comfort deep in the jungle. The Avenue of the Volcanoes — the dramatic Andean corridor lined with snow-capped peaks including Cotopaxi and Chimborazo — rewards exploration on horseback or by private 4x4 from a beautifully restored hacienda. Otavalo's indigenous market, one of the largest and most vibrant in South America, and the cloud forests of Mindo complete a picture of extraordinary natural and cultural diversity that few destinations anywhere can match.

Ecuador has two main international airports. Mariscal Sucre International Airport in Quito (UIO) is the primary gateway for most luxury itineraries and is served by direct flights from Miami, New York, Atlanta, Madrid, Amsterdam, and Bogotá. José Joaquín de Olmedo International Airport in Guayaquil (GYE) serves as an alternative entry point, particularly for travellers routing to the Galápagos via the southern gateway of Baltra Island. Flight times from the US East Coast are approximately 5 to 6 hours, and from Western Europe approximately 11 to 12 hours via a single connection.
To reach the Galápagos Islands, domestic flights operate daily from both Quito and Guayaquil to the islands of Baltra and San Cristóbal, with flight times of approximately two hours. We coordinate all international and domestic flight connections, private airport transfers, Galápagos Transit Control Cards, and national park entry logistics as part of your fully managed bespoke itinerary — ensuring every transition between destinations is seamless and stress-free.

Ecuador's compact size and excellent international connections make it an ideal anchor for a broader Latin American journey, and multi-country itineraries built around Ecuador are among our most rewarding to design. Peru is the most natural and popular pairing — a journey combining the Galápagos Islands with Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley, and Lima's world-class restaurant scene creates one of the world's truly great luxury travel itineraries, covering two of South America's most iconic and complementary destinations.
Colombia connects seamlessly northward — Cartagena's Caribbean colonial grandeur, the Coffee Region's lush green landscapes, and Bogotá's thriving cultural scene pair beautifully with Ecuador's natural diversity for a compelling Andean and Caribbean circuit. The Amazon can be explored on both sides of the border — combining Ecuador's upper Amazon lodges with Peru's Manu National Park or the Tambopata Reserve extends the wildlife experience across one of the world's most biodiverse regions. For the most ambitious itineraries, a grand circuit encompassing Ecuador, Peru, Bolivia, and Colombia creates an extraordinary journey through the full breadth of Andean and Amazonian South America. Our specialists design every detail, from first flight to final dinner.
