WHY VISIT PERU?
Best Time to Visit PERU
Peru is a year-round destination, but the best time to visit depends on which regions you plan to explore.
May to October is the dry season across the Andes and the most popular window for visiting Machu Picchu, the Sacred Valley and Cusco. Skies are clear, trails are dry, and the light in the highlands is extraordinary. This is peak season, particularly June to August, so advance booking for the Inca Trail and Machu Picchu entry slots is essential.
November to April is the wet season in the highlands, bringing lush green landscapes, fewer crowds and significantly lower prices. Rain tends to fall in the afternoons rather than all day, making morning excursions perfectly manageable. The Inca Trail closes entirely in February for maintenance.
Lima and the coast are best visited from December to April, when the Pacific fog lifts and the city enjoys its warmest, sunniest weather. Lima is compelling year-round however; its food scene, cultural life and coastal neighborhoods are independent of season.
The Amazon is accessible year-round. High water season (November to April) offers excellent wildlife viewing from boats as animals concentrate near waterways, while low water season (May to October) allows jungle walks on exposed riverbanks and beaches.

The dry season from May to October is ideal for the highlands, Machu Picchu and the Inca Trail, with clear skies and stable conditions. Lima and the coast are at their best from December to April. The Amazon offers excellent wildlife viewing year-round. See our full seasonal guide above for a detailed breakdown by region.

US, UK, EU, Canadian and Australian passport holders do not require a visa for tourist stays of up to 90 days. Entry is straightforward and no advance visa application is needed. We always confirm the latest entry requirements for your specific passport before travel.
-
We recommend a minimum of 10 to 12 days for a first Peru journey covering Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley and Machu Picchu at a comfortable pace. Adding the Amazon requires an additional 3 to 4 days. For those wanting to include Arequipa, Colca Canyon or Lake Titicaca, 14 to 16 days is ideal.
-
Cusco sits at approximately 3,400 metres (11,150 feet) and altitude sickness, known locally as soroche, is a genuine consideration for visitors arriving from sea level. We always recommend arriving in Cusco via Lima first, allowing a night to acclimatize before heading into the highlands. Most travelers adjust well within 24 to 48 hours. We can also arrange private medical consultations and altitude medication where needed.
-
Yes. Peru is a well-established and popular tourist destination with excellent infrastructure for visitors in its main travel regions. The areas covered on a private luxury itinerary, including Lima, Cusco, the Sacred Valley, Machu Picchu, Arequipa and the Amazon lodges, are all considered safe and visited by hundreds of thousands of international travelers annually. As with any destination, standard travel awareness applies.
-
Peru is widely regarded as one of the world's great culinary destinations. Lima is home to several of the world's top-ranked restaurants, including Central, Maido and Kjolle, and a food culture that blends indigenous Andean, Japanese, Chinese and Spanish influences into something entirely unique. Ceviche, lomo saltado, causa and cuy are among the dishes that define Peruvian cuisine. We incorporate curated culinary experiences throughout all our Peru itineraries.
-
Absolutely. Peru pairs naturally with Bolivia (Lake Titicaca and the Uyuni Salt Flats), Ecuador (the Galapagos Islands and Quito), Colombia (Cartagena and the coffee region) and Chile (Santiago and Patagonia) for a broader South America journey. We design all multi-country itineraries as fully tailor-made private experiences.
-
The difference in Peru is significant. Machu Picchu entry slots and Inca Trail permits must be booked months in advance and are genuinely limited. Without the right booking strategy, you may miss out entirely. A private guide transforms sites like Machu Picchu and the Sacred Valley from impressive sights into deeply understood experiences. The logistical complexity of moving between Lima, the highlands and the Amazon, with altitude acclimatization built in, is precisely what our travel designers handle for you.
