Best Time to Visit namibia

May to October is the dry season and the best time to visit Namibia for wildlife and desert exploration. Vegetation thins and animals gather around waterholes in Etosha, making game viewing some of the most rewarding on the continent. In the desert, cooler temperatures make long drives and guided walks far more comfortable, and the light across the dunes of Sossusvlei is extraordinary — particularly at dawn and dusk. Expect clear skies, minimal rainfall and temperatures between 20°C and 30°C (68°F to 86°F).

June to August represents the peak of the dry season and is ideal for those prioritising Etosha game drives and close-up wildlife encounters. With no vegetation obscuring sightlines and animals concentrated at known water sources, this is the optimal window for lion, elephant, rhino and leopard sightings. Nights can be cool, particularly in the highlands around Windhoek and the Fish River Canyon.

November to April brings the green season — the Namibian landscape transforms dramatically, with desert flowers blooming across the Namib and migratory birds arriving in large numbers. While some tracks become difficult after heavy rains, this is the most visually stunning time to photograph the dunes and experience Namibia's quieter, more intimate side. The Skeleton Coast and the Atlantic shores remain accessible year-round, and the combination of fewer visitors and lower rates at luxury lodges make this an appealing option for experienced travellers.

DISCOVER NAMIBIA’S REGIONS

Each corner of Namibia tells a completely different story. From ancient deserts and wildlife-rich floodplains to windswept Atlantic coastlines and a vibrant capital city, our tailor-made safaris are built around the landscapes that speak to you — combining private access, expert guides and handpicked luxury lodges for an experience entirely your own.

Sossusvlei & the Namib Desert

The Namib is the world's oldest desert and one of Africa's most iconic landscapes. The towering red dunes of Sossusvlei — some rising over 300 metres — are best explored at dawn on a private guided walk, while the ghostly white clay pan of Deadvlei is among the most photographed scenes on the continent. Luxury desert lodges here are architecturally extraordinary, placing guests at the heart of a landscape of profound, otherworldly beauty.

Etosha

Etosha National Park is Namibia's premier wildlife destination — a vast saltpan ecosystem where lion, elephant, black rhino, leopard and cheetah converge around floodlit waterholes after dark. The park's open, semi-arid terrain makes for exceptional game viewing year-round, and its rare population of black-faced impala and desert-adapted species set it apart from any other safari destination in southern Africa. Private concessions bordering the park offer exclusive game drives beyond the main reserve.

Skeleton Coast

One of the world's most remote and dramatic coastlines, the Skeleton Coast stretches along Namibia's Atlantic shore in near-total wilderness. Shipwrecks, roaring seal colonies, desert-adapted lions and vast rolling fog banks create a landscape of raw, elemental power. Access to the northern Skeleton Coast is strictly limited and exclusively by private fly-in safari — making it one of the most exclusive and unforgettable destinations in all of Africa.

Windhoek

Namibia's compact and cosmopolitan capital is the natural starting point for any luxury Namibia safari. Set in the central highlands at over 1,600 metres, Windhoek offers a relaxed introduction to Namibian culture, excellent cuisine and a selection of refined boutique guesthouses. Most fly-in safaris begin and end here, with direct connections to the country's key airstrips making onward travel to the desert and wilderness seamless.

Signature Experiences in NAMIBIA

Every journey through Namibia is shaped by extraordinary access, expert private guides, and moments crafted to transcend the ordinary — from the rust-red dunes of Sossusvlei and the vast wildlife sanctuaries of Etosha to the wild, shipwrecked shores of the Skeleton Coast and the colonial elegance of Swakopmund.

Sossusvlei: Private Desert Dune Expedition

Ascend the world's oldest and tallest dunes before dawn with a private guide, arriving at Dead Vlei as the first golden light strikes its centuries-old camel thorn skeletons. Exclusive access ensures you experience the silence and scale of the Namib Desert in complete solitude — far beyond the reach of day-trippers.

Etosha: A Private Wildlife Sanctuary

Witness Namibia's iconic desert-adapted elephant, black rhino, and lion gather at floodlit waterholes under an immense African sky. Stay at an exclusive private concession bordering Etosha's salt pan for unrivalled game drives and night safaris that reveal the park's extraordinary nocturnal life.

Skeleton Coast: A Wilderness Fly-In Safari

Explore one of Earth's most remote and untouched wildernesses by private charter — landing on vast beaches strewn with shipwrecks, seals, and desert-adapted lion. Access is strictly limited by permit, making this one of Africa's most exclusive and pristine safari experiences, guided by a team of expert naturalists.

Damaraland: Ancient Landscapes & Himba Culture

Journey through Namibia's most dramatic scenery — volcanic plateaus, ancient rock engravings at Twyfelfontein, and the Brandberg massif — with privileged access to Himba communities rarely encountered by travellers. Rest at an award-winning desert lodge where glass walls dissolve the boundary between suite and wilderness.

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling to NAMIBIA

  • Namibia is widely regarded as one of Africa's safest and most stable travel destinations. It has a strong democratic government, a low population density, and well-maintained roads and infrastructure. Violent crime against tourists is rare, particularly in the remote safari regions and national parks where our itineraries are based.

Standard travel precautions apply in Windhoek's city centre after dark. Our teams provide thorough pre-departure briefings, and all guides and lodges maintain the highest standards of guest safety throughout your journey.

  • Citizens of most Western European countries, the United States, Canada, Australia, and New Zealand do not require a visa to enter Namibia for stays of up to 90 days. A visa exemption is granted on arrival at Hosea Kutako International Airport in Windhoek.

We recommend ensuring your passport carries at least six months' validity beyond your travel dates and has sufficient blank pages for entry stamps. Our specialists handle all pre-departure documentation checks as part of your bespoke itinerary service.

  • The dry season (May to October) is the finest time for game viewing. As water sources diminish, wildlife concentrates around Etosha's waterholes in remarkable numbers. Skies are clear and cloudless, temperatures are mild, and the rust-red dune landscape takes on a cinematic quality prized by photographers.

The green season (November to April) transforms the desert with brief, dramatic thunderstorms and a flush of wildflowers. Newborn wildlife, exceptional birdlife, and significantly lower lodge rates make it an appealing choice for the discerning traveller who welcomes a more unpredictable — and often more intimate — landscape.

  • Namibia offers something distinct from East or southern Africa's more traditional safari destinations. Where Kenya delivers the spectacle of the Great Migration and Botswana the waterways of the Okavango Delta, Namibia's defining quality is solitude — vast, otherworldly landscapes where encounters with desert-adapted wildlife feel genuinely remote and personal.

Game densities are lower than in Eswatini or the Maasai Mara, but the trade-off is an almost complete absence of other travellers. For those seeking a safari that feels like genuine exploration rather than a well-worn circuit, Namibia is unmatched on the continent.

  • We recommend a minimum of 10 to 14 nights to experience Namibia's most iconic regions without feeling rushed. A well-crafted itinerary of this length might combine three nights in Sossusvlei, three in Damaraland, four in Etosha, and two on the Skeleton Coast — connected seamlessly by private charter flights.

For those wishing to include Fish River Canyon, the Kalahari, or a coastal stay in Swakopmund, extending to 16–18 nights allows each destination the time it deserves. Our specialists design every itinerary around your pace and priorities.

  • Namibia has quietly emerged as one of Africa's most compelling luxury lodge destinations. Standout properties include &Beyond Sossusvlei Desert Lodge — with its observatory and private dune access — Little Kulala for its rooftop sleeping under a canopy of stars, and Hoanib Skeleton Coast Camp for its unparalleled remoteness and desert-adapted lion encounters.

In Etosha, Onguma The Fort and AndBeyond Sossusvlei set the standard for game-viewing in absolute comfort. Every lodge featured in our itineraries is personally inspected by our team and selected for both guest experience and conservation credentials.

  • The main international gateway is Hosea Kutako International Airport (WDH) in Windhoek. Direct flights operate from Frankfurt (Lufthansa) and Johannesburg (South African Airways, FlySafair), with connections through London, Amsterdam, and Dubai. Most clients travelling from Europe or North America route through Johannesburg on a one-stop itinerary.

Once in Namibia, the vast distances between key destinations make private charter flights the preferred option for our clients — combining efficiency with breathtaking aerial views of the dune fields and desert plains below. Self-drive and guided road transfers are also available where road conditions allow.

  • Namibia combines naturally with several neighbouring destinations. Botswana's Okavango Delta provides a compelling contrast — water-rich and teeming with wildlife — while South Africa's Cape Winelands offer a refined, gastronomy-focused close to any expedition. Zimbabwe's Victoria Falls is a perennial addition for those seeking drama and scale.

For the most ambitious multi-country itineraries, a circuit encompassing Namibia, Botswana, Zimbabwe, and Zambia creates an extraordinary journey through southern Africa's greatest landscapes. Our specialists will design the optimal routing and pacing to ensure each destination is experienced at its very finest.
