Best Time to Visit Tanzania

June to October is widely regarded as the best time for a Tanzania safari. The dry season brings thinning vegetation and animals concentrating around water sources, making game viewing exceptionally rewarding across the Serengeti, Tarangire and Ruaha. This is also peak season for the Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti, one of the most dramatic wildlife spectacles on earth. Expect warm, dry days and cool nights, with temperatures ranging from 20°C to 28°C (68°F to 82°F).

January to February offers a remarkable alternative — the short dry spell within the wet season, when the southern Serengeti hosts the wildebeest calving season. Thousands of newborns attract predators in extraordinary numbers, and the landscape is lush and green. Fewer visitors mean more exclusive game drive experiences, and rates at many luxury camps are lower than peak season.

November to December and March to May bring the long and short rains respectively. While some remote camps close during this period, those who travel find a transformed landscape, exceptional birdwatching, and the most private safari conditions of the year. Zanzibar remains a year-round destination, with the warmest and driest conditions running from June to October and December to February — perfect for combining a beach stay with your Tanzania safari.

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling to TANZANIA

  • Tanzania is widely considered one of Africa's safest and most stable destinations for luxury travel. The country has a strong tradition of welcoming international visitors, and its established luxury safari circuit — including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Zanzibar — operates to world-class standards of safety and service. Private lodges and camps maintain 24-hour security, and your dedicated travel specialist will ensure all logistics are handled seamlessly from arrival to departure.

  • Most nationalities, including US, UK, EU, and Australian citizens, require a visa to enter Tanzania. A standard tourist visa can be obtained on arrival at Kilimanjaro or Julius Nyerere International Airport, or arranged in advance online via Tanzania's e-Visa portal. For a seamless luxury experience, we recommend securing your e-Visa before departure. Your travel specialist will guide you through the process as part of your bespoke itinerary planning.

  • Tanzania offers exceptional wildlife viewing year-round, but the dry season from June to October is widely regarded as the finest time to safari — offering clear skies, sparse vegetation, and concentrated wildlife at water sources. The Great Migration river crossings in the northern Serengeti typically peak between July and September. For those seeking the dramatic calving season on the southern Serengeti, January to March is extraordinary. Zanzibar is best enjoyed June to October or December to February.

  • Tanzania offers a distinctly exclusive safari experience compared to Kenya or South Africa. The Serengeti hosts the world's largest terrestrial wildlife migration, and Tanzania's conservation areas are among the least crowded on the continent — particularly when accessed via private concessions. Ngorongoro Crater is unique in the world: an intact volcanic caldera supporting the densest concentration of large mammals on Earth. For travellers seeking remoteness, exclusivity, and extraordinary diversity — from the wilderness of Ruaha to the shores of Zanzibar — Tanzania stands apart.

  • We recommend a minimum of 10 to 14 days to truly experience Tanzania's breadth. A considered itinerary might begin with 3–4 nights in the Serengeti (ideally in a private mobile camp), 2 nights at a luxury Ngorongoro lodge, and conclude with 3–4 nights on Zanzibar. For those wishing to include a Kilimanjaro expedition, the remote Selous Game Reserve, or Ruaha National Park — one of Africa's most undiscovered wilderness areas — allow 16 to 21 days.

  • Tanzania's luxury accommodation ranges from intimate tented camps on private Serengeti concessions to clifftop lodges perched above the Ngorongoro Crater rim. Standout properties include &Beyond Serengeti Under Canvas, Singita Grumeti, Four Seasons Safari Lodge Serengeti, and The Highlands in Ngorongoro. On Zanzibar, Mnemba Island Lodge and Zuri Zanzibar are among the finest boutique retreats on the East African coast. Your specialist will match properties precisely to your style, privacy preferences, and travel dates.

  • Most luxury travellers fly into Kilimanjaro International Airport (JRO) or Julius Nyerere International Airport in Dar es Salaam (DAR), with connections from London, Amsterdam, Dubai, Nairobi, and Addis Ababa. We recommend routing through Dubai (Emirates) or Amsterdam (KLM) for the most seamless connections. Once in Tanzania, scheduled and private charter flights connect to all major safari destinations, including the Serengeti, Ngorongoro, and Zanzibar — all arrangements handled as part of your bespoke itinerary.

  • Absolutely. Tanzania pairs beautifully with several world-class destinations. A classic combination is Tanzania with Kenya — flying between the Serengeti and Masai Mara for the full Great Migration experience. Rwanda is an increasingly popular addition for those wishing to combine safari with mountain gorilla trekking. For a complete Indian Ocean escape, Mozambique's Bazaruto Archipelago or the Seychelles complement Zanzibar perfectly. Our specialists design seamless multi-country itineraries tailored to your interests, pace, and style.
