Best Time to Visit RWANDA
June to September is the long dry season and the best time to visit Rwanda for gorilla trekking and wildlife experiences. Trails through Volcanoes National Park are more manageable, forest paths are less muddy, and the chances of clear sightings are at their highest. In Akagera, thinning vegetation makes game viewing increasingly rewarding, with animals gathering around water sources across the savannah. Expect pleasant temperatures, minimal rainfall and comfortable conditions for both trekking and game drives.
June to August represents the peak of the dry season and is ideal for those prioritising gorilla and chimpanzee encounters. With drier trail conditions and animals more concentrated and visible, this is the optimal window for primate trekking in both Volcanoes and Nyungwe. Temperatures are mild and agreeable across the highlands, making long forest walks far more enjoyable. This is Rwanda's most popular travel period, so permits and lodge availability should be secured well in advance.
December to February brings the short dry season — a second excellent window for gorilla trekking and a great time to visit if you prefer fewer fellow travellers on the trails. The Rwandan landscape is lush and intensely green from the preceding rains, making this one of the most visually beautiful times to visit. Birdwatching is exceptional throughout this period, with migratory species present across the country. The combination of good trekking conditions, vibrant scenery and slightly lower demand makes this an attractive option for discerning travellers.
DISCOVER RWANDA’s REGIONS
Each corner of Rwanda tells a completely different story. From mist-shrouded volcanoes and ancient rainforests to wide open savannah plains and the serene shores of Lake Kivu, our tailor-made safaris are built around the landscapes that speak to you — combining private access, expert guides and handpicked luxury lodges for an experience entirely your own.
VOLCANOES NATIONAL PARK
Volcanoes National Park is Rwanda's most iconic wildlife destination and one of the most extraordinary places on earth. Home to nearly half of the world's remaining mountain gorillas, this ancient volcanic landscape offers an encounter unlike anything else in Africa. Trekking through dense bamboo forest to sit in the presence of a gorilla family is an experience that stays with travellers for a lifetime. The park is also home to golden monkeys and forms part of the greater Virunga conservation area shared with Uganda and the DRC.
AKAGERA NATIONAL PARK
Akagera is Rwanda's only savannah park and one of Africa's great conservation success stories. Stretching across the eastern border with Tanzania, the park is home to the Big Five — including lions and black rhino, both successfully reintroduced in recent years. A network of lakes, wetlands and open grasslands makes for wonderfully varied game drives, and the birdlife is among the richest in the region. Akagera offers a classic East African safari experience in an intimate, uncrowded setting.
NYUNGWE FOREST
One of Africa's oldest and most biodiverse rainforests, Nyungwe is a remarkable destination for primate lovers and nature enthusiasts alike. The forest is home to chimpanzees, colobus monkeys and twelve other primate species, as well as an extraordinary array of birds. A canopy walkway suspended high above the forest floor offers a truly unforgettable perspective on this ancient ecosystem. Remote, pristine and relatively undiscovered, Nyungwe rewards those who venture off the beaten path.
KIGALI
Rwanda's compact and cosmopolitan capital is one of Africa's most surprising and impressive cities. Clean, safe and vibrantly forward-looking, Kigali offers world-class dining, thought-provoking cultural experiences and a warmth that reflects the country as a whole. The Kigali Genocide Memorial is a deeply moving and essential visit, offering vital context for understanding modern Rwanda. Most safaris begin and end here, and many travellers find themselves wishing they had allowed more time to explore the city itself.

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling to RWANDA
-
Rwanda is consistently ranked among Africa's safest and most well-governed travel destinations. The country has undergone a remarkable transformation over the past three decades and is widely praised for its political stability, low crime rates, and exceptionally clean, orderly cities — Kigali regularly features among the continent's safest capitals.
Tourists travelling to Volcanoes National Park, Nyungwe Forest, and Akagera face no significant safety concerns. Our guides and lodge partners maintain the highest standards of guest welfare, and our team provides comprehensive pre-departure briefings tailored to your itinerary.
-
Rwanda operates a visa-on-arrival policy for citizens of all countries, making it one of Africa's most accessible destinations. Visitors can also apply in advance through the official Rwanda e-visa portal, which we recommend to save time on arrival at Kigali International Airport.
A standard tourist visa grants a 30-day stay, extendable to 90 days. We ensure all visa and entry documentation is confirmed well in advance as part of your bespoke itinerary service. Your passport should carry at least six months' validity beyond your travel dates.
-
The dry seasons (June to September and December to February) are the most popular times to visit, offering the easiest trekking conditions in Volcanoes National Park. Trails through the bamboo forest are less slippery, gorilla family sightings are more predictable, and clear skies provide magnificent views of the Virunga volcanoes.
The wet seasons (March to May and October to November) bring lush, verdant landscapes and significantly fewer visitors. Gorilla trekking continues year-round regardless of weather, and the lower lodge rates and reduced crowds can make this a rewarding time for the discerning traveller who embraces a more intimate experience.
-
Both Rwanda and Uganda offer extraordinary mountain gorilla encounters, but the experiences differ meaningfully. Rwanda's Volcanoes National Park is the more refined choice for luxury travellers — lodge standards are among Africa's finest, transfers from Kigali are swift, and the overall infrastructure is polished and seamless. Rwanda's gorilla permits are priced at a premium, which itself limits visitor numbers and ensures a more exclusive encounter.
Uganda's Bwindi Impenetrable Forest tends to offer a rawer, more remote experience and lower permit costs, but longer travel times and less developed luxury accommodation. For clients prioritising comfort, brevity of travel, and a destination that pairs naturally with the wider East African circuit, Rwanda is the definitive choice.
-
We recommend a minimum of 7 to 10 nights to experience Rwanda's key destinations without feeling rushed. A well-crafted itinerary might begin with two nights in Kigali, move to three nights in Volcanoes National Park for gorilla and golden monkey trekking, then continue to two nights in Nyungwe Forest for chimpanzee habituation, before closing with two nights at Akagera for classic savannah game drives.
Rwanda also combines beautifully with a stay on Lake Kivu — one of Africa's Great Rift Valley lakes — where boutique lakeside lodges offer a serene and scenic pause between wildlife experiences. Our specialists tailor every itinerary to your pace and priorities.
-
Rwanda's luxury lodge offering has evolved rapidly and now rivals the very best in Africa. In Volcanoes National Park, Singita Kwitonda Lodge and One&Only Gorilla's Nest set an exceptional standard — combining architectural elegance with direct access to gorilla trekking departure points and guiding of the highest calibre.
In Nyungwe Forest, One&Only Nyungwe House is a standout — a converted tea estate offering refined interiors, private plunge pools, and immersive forest experiences. At Akagera, Magashi Camp by Wilderness offers an intimate, six-tent property overlooking Lake Rwanyakazinga with superb Big Five game viewing. Every property featured in our itineraries is personally inspected and selected for both guest experience and conservation credentials.
-
The main gateway is Kigali International Airport (KGL), which is well connected internationally. RwandAir operates direct flights from London Heathrow, Brussels, Paris, and several other European hubs, making Rwanda one of the most directly accessible safari destinations on the continent. Connections are also available via Nairobi, Addis Ababa, Dubai, and Johannesburg.
Once in Rwanda, distances between key destinations are relatively short by African standards. Volcanoes National Park is approximately two hours from Kigali by road, while Nyungwe and Akagera are each around three to four hours. Private charter flights are available for those wishing to maximise their time in the field.
-
Rwanda combines exceptionally well with neighbouring destinations. Tanzania's Serengeti and Zanzibar create a natural pairing — contrasting Rwanda's primate-focused forest encounters with the open-plains drama of the Great Migration and a beach finale on the Indian Ocean. Kenya's Maasai Mara offers a similarly compelling complement for game-viewing enthusiasts.
For the most ambitious multi-country itineraries, a circuit encompassing Rwanda, Uganda, Tanzania, and Kenya offers an unparalleled East African journey across primates, the Big Five, and some of the continent's most iconic landscapes. Our specialists design the optimal routing, pacing, and lodge selection to ensure every destination is experienced at its absolute finest.
