WHY VISIT PORTUGAL?

Portugal is one of the most quietly extraordinary countries in Europe, a small nation at the western edge of the continent that produced one of the greatest maritime empires in history and that carries the accumulated culture of that expansion, its music, its architecture, its food and its particular relationship with distance and longing, in every aspect of its daily life. It is also a country of remarkable geographical variety for its size, from the granite mountains and Atlantic coast of the north to the cork oak plains of the Alentejo, the limestone sea caves of the Algarve and the subtropical laurisilva forests of Madeira and the volcanic calderas of the Azores.

What makes Portugal exceptional for the private traveller is the combination of depth and genuine warmth. The Portuguese relationship with visitors is one of the most authentic in Europe, a hospitality that reflects a culture accustomed to the idea of the traveller and genuinely interested in the people who arrive with curiosity rather than simply a camera. The wine, which ranges from the extraordinary Vintage Ports of the Douro Valley to the mineral Alvarinhos of the Minho and the age-worthy reds of the Alentejo, is among the finest and most undervalued in Europe. And the food, built on the extraordinary Atlantic seafood of three thousand kilometres of coastline and refined by the specific spice traditions that the Age of Discovery brought back to Portuguese kitchens, is one of the most distinctive and most pleasurable in the continent.

Many travellers combine Portugal with Spain for a broader Iberian journey, or with Morocco for those wanting to follow the specific Atlantic and North African connections that shaped both countries.

Best Time to Visit PORTUGAL

April to June is our most recommended window for mainland Portugal. The temperatures are warm and comfortable across the country, the landscapes are at their most vivid before the summer drought, the wildflowers of the Alentejo plains are extraordinary in April and the Douro Valley vine terraces are in new leaf. Lisbon and Porto in May, with long evenings and mild temperatures, are at their most pleasurable.

September to October is the other exceptional window and the finest season for the Douro Valley. The Port wine harvest runs through September and a private visit to a quinta during the vindima, when the grapes are being brought in from the terraced vineyards and the lagares are in use, is one of the most atmospheric seasonal experiences in European wine travel. The Algarve in September, after the peak summer crowds have dispersed, is at its most enjoyable.

July and August is peak summer season and the most crowded period at all major sites. The Algarve and the Atlantic coast beaches are at their most vibrant. Lisbon and Porto in August can be very hot but both cities maintain their character and their restaurant culture regardless of the season. The Azores are cooler and more pleasant in summer than mainland Portugal.

Winter (November to March) is the finest season for Lisbon and Porto, when the mild Atlantic climate keeps both cities warm enough for outdoor dining and the absence of summer visitors returns them to their most genuinely local atmosphere. Madeira is at its finest in January and February for the extraordinary flower season that transforms the island with colour.

DISCOVER PORTUGAL REGIONS

From the fado culture and Age of Discovery heritage of Lisbon and the wine cellars and riverside energy of Porto to the vine terraces of the Douro Valley, the sea caves of the Algarve, the laurisilva forests of Madeira and the volcanic calderas of the Azores, each region of Portugal offers a completely distinct private journey.

LISBON: THE CITY ON SEVEN HILLS

Lisbon is one of the most beautiful and most characterful capitals in Europe, a city of tiled facades, hilltop viewpoints, the extraordinary fado music that emerged from its oldest neighbourhoods and the specific melancholy of a culture shaped by centuries of maritime adventure and loss. The Alfama, the ancient Moorish quarter that cascades down to the river below the São Jorge Castle, the Belém tower and the Jerónimos Monastery that celebrate the Age of Discovery at the mouth of the Tagus, and the extraordinary tile museum that tells the story of the azulejo tradition across six centuries make Lisbon a city of extraordinary depth that rewards those who move slowly through it.

PORTO: WINE, GRANITE AND THE DOURO

Porto is Portugal's second city and its most immediately captivating, a granite city of baroque towers and tiled facades stacked above the Douro River where the Port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia have been ageing their wines in oak barrels since the seventeenth century. A private Porto experience combines the extraordinary azulejo interiors of São Bento station and the Igreja de São Francisco with a tasting in one of the finest Port lodges and an evening in the Ribeira waterfront district where the restaurants and bars reflect the specific warmth and directness of the northern Portuguese character.

THE DOURO VALLEY: THE OLDEST DEMARCATED WINE REGION ON EARTH

The Douro Valley, demarcated in 1756 and therefore the oldest protected wine region in the world, is one of the most dramatic and most beautiful agricultural landscapes in Europe. The vine terraces carved into the schist hillsides above the river, which catch and retain the heat in a valley that can reach forty degrees in summer, produce the fortified wines of Port and a growing range of extraordinary unfortified reds and whites that are attracting international attention. A private cruise along the Douro between Régua and Pinhão, stopping at quintas for tastings with the winemakers, is one of the finest wine journeys available in Europe.

THE ALGARVE: LIMESTONE COAST AND HIDDEN COVES

The Algarve's coastline, where millennia of Atlantic erosion have carved the limestone into extraordinary formations of sea caves, arches and golden rock stacks, is one of the most dramatic in Europe. The beaches concealed within the limestone formations, accessible only by boat or through sea caves, are among the finest and most completely private in Portugal. Beyond the resort coast, the hinterland of the Alentejo, with its cork oak plains, medieval hilltop towns and estates producing some of Portugal's finest wines and olive oils, offers a completely different Algarve experience from the one most visitors know.

MADEIRA: THE FLOATING GARDEN OF THE ATLANTIC

Madeira is one of the most extraordinary islands in the Atlantic world, a Portuguese archipelago of volcanic origin two thousand kilometres from Lisbon whose subtropical climate and dramatic topography produce a landscape of extraordinary variety within a very small area. The laurisilva forest, a UNESCO World Heritage ancient woodland that covers much of the island's highest terrain and represents one of the last remaining examples of the forest that once covered southern Europe before the last ice age, is one of the most extraordinary natural environments in Europe. The levada walks, the irrigation channels carved into the mountainsides over five centuries that now provide some of the finest hiking paths in the Atlantic world, are the definitive Madeira experience.

The twin volcanic crater lakes of Sete Cidades on São Miguel island in the Azores, surrounded by lush green calderas and a small village on the lakeside, Portugal

THE AZORES: VOLCANOES, WHALES AND THE MIDDLE OF THE ATLANTIC

The Azores, nine volcanic islands in the middle of the Atlantic Ocean roughly equidistant between Lisbon and New York, are the most remote and most extraordinary part of Portugal and one of the finest nature destinations in Europe. The calderas and crater lakes of São Miguel, the extraordinary whale and dolphin populations that inhabit the deep Atlantic waters between the islands, the hydrothermal activity visible at Furnas where geysers and hot springs emerge from the earth and where the traditional cozido das Furnas stew is cooked underground, and the extraordinary endemic flora of the laurisilva forests make the Azores a destination of genuine natural wonder.

Signature Experiences in PORTUGAL

Portugal rewards those who go beyond the obvious and allow a private guide who knows each region from the inside to reveal the country at its most extraordinary. From a wine cruise through the extraordinary terraced landscapes of the Douro Valley and a private boat through the sea caves of Benagil to horseback riding in the Alentejo and whale watching in the deep Atlantic waters of the Azores, these are the moments we build every Portugal journey around.

CRUISE AND WINE TASTING IN THE DOURO VALLEY

A private cruise along the Douro between Régua and Pinhão, moving through the extraordinary terraced vine landscape that has been carved into the schist hillsides above the river over centuries, stopping at quintas for tastings with the winemakers and understanding the specific geology and microclimate that produces both Port and the increasingly celebrated unfortified wines of the valley, is one of the finest wine and landscape experiences available in Europe.

BENAGIL SEA CAVE BY PRIVATE BOAT

The Benagil cave on the Algarve coast, a limestone cavern accessible only from the sea whose domed ceiling is pierced by a circular opening that illuminates the beach inside with a quality of light that is entirely extraordinary, is one of the most beautiful natural spaces in Portugal. A private boat from the Algarve coast, arriving at Benagil before the morning crowds and moving along the extraordinary limestone formations of the coast between sea caves and rock arches, is the right way to experience one of the most photographed places in the country.

HORSEBACK RIDING IN THE ALENTEJO

The Alentejo, the great cork oak plain that covers a third of Portugal south of the Tagus, is the landscape in which the Lusitano horse, one of the oldest and most distinguished breeds in the world, has been bred and ridden for centuries. A private horseback ride through the Alentejo, moving through the cork oak landscape between the medieval hilltop towns and the estates producing some of Portugal's finest wines, with a guide who understands the specific tradition of the Lusitano and the equestrian culture of the region, is one of the most specifically Portuguese experiences available anywhere in the country.

HIKING IN MADEIRA

The levada walks of Madeira, following the ancient irrigation channels carved into the mountainsides through the laurisilva forest and along the edges of dramatic volcanic ravines, are the finest and most specifically Madeiran hiking experience available on the island. A private guided walk on the Levada do Caldeirao Verde or the Levada das 25 Fontes, with a guide who knows the specific ecology of the ancient forest and the history of the water management system that created the paths, transforms a hike into an understanding of one of the most extraordinary and most ancient agricultural landscapes in the Atlantic world.

A private boat from São Miguel or Faial, with a marine biologist guide who can identify individual animals and explain the specific behaviour of each encounter, produces an intimacy with these extraordinary animals that is among the finest wildlife experiences available in Europe.

PORT WINE TASTING IN PORTO

The Port wine lodges of Vila Nova de Gaia, on the south bank of the Douro facing Porto, have been ageing the wines of the Douro Valley in oak barrels since the seventeenth century and represent one of the finest and most historically significant wine traditions in Europe. A private tasting in one of the great lodges, moving through the different styles from white and tawny to the great Vintage Ports that age for decades, with a guide who understands the specific history and the specific winemaking decisions behind each expression, is one of the most genuinely educational and most pleasurable wine experiences available in Portugal.

PRIVATE VISIT TO COIMBRA UNIVERSITY

The University of Coimbra, founded in 1290 and one of the oldest universities in continuous operation in the world, is one of the finest pieces of baroque architecture in Portugal and one of the most historically significant educational institutions in Europe. The Biblioteca Joanina, the eighteenth-century library whose gilded baroque interior and ceiling frescoes make it one of the most beautiful rooms in Portugal, is accessible on a private visit that allows more time and more access than the standard public tour. The university's Fado tradition, distinct from the Lisbon style and considered by many musicologists to be the purer form of the genre, is best experienced in the medieval streets of the old city after dark.

The colourful romantic Pena Palace perched on a forested hilltop in Sintra, with its yellow and red towers rising above the trees under a blue sky, Portugal

SINTRA AND QUINTA DA REGALEIRA

Sintra, the UNESCO World Heritage hill town thirty minutes from Lisbon where the Portuguese royal family built their summer palaces in the nineteenth century, is one of the most extraordinary concentrations of romantic architecture in Europe. The Quinta da Regaleira, the estate built at the turn of the twentieth century by a wealthy eccentric with Masonic and Rosicrucian connections, contains a palace, a chapel, a garden of extraordinary symbolic complexity and the Initiation Well, a spiral staircase descending nine levels into the earth through a tunnel system that connects the well to the grottos and lakes of the garden. A private visit with a guide who understands the specific symbolism of each element of the quinta transforms it from an extraordinary garden into an extraordinary puzzle.

Frequently Asked Questions About Traveling to PORTUGAL

  • Spring (March to June) and autumn (September to October) are the finest seasons, offering warm clear days across the country without the intensity of peak summer. Lisbon and Porto are excellent year-round. The Algarve coast is at its best from May to September, while the Douro Valley is most spectacular during the September and October harvest season when the vineyards turn gold and the grape picking is in full swing. Winter is mild and atmospheric in the cities and ideal for those who prefer a quieter, more local experience.

  • We recommend a minimum of eight to ten days for a first Portugal journey covering Lisbon, one of the surrounding regions such as Sintra, the Alentejo or the Algarve, and Porto or the Douro Valley. Those wanting to explore northern Portugal, the islands of the Azores or Madeira, or a combined Portugal and Spain itinerary should plan for twelve to fourteen days.

  • Lisbon is one of Europe's most captivating capitals and rewards those who go beyond the standard tourist trail. A private walking tour through Alfama, the oldest neighbourhood in the city, reveals Moorish architecture, hidden miradouros and the sound of fado drifting from open windows. A private tasting of Portuguese wines and petiscos in a local wine bar, a visit to the extraordinary tile collection at the Museu Nacional do Azulejo, and a day trip to the palaces of Sintra with a private guide round out one of the most satisfying city experiences in southern Europe.

  • The Douro Valley is one of the oldest demarcated wine regions in the world and one of the most beautiful river landscapes in Europe. Terraced vineyards carved into steep schist hillsides drop down to the Douro River, which winds through the valley between Portugal and Spain. A private journey through the Douro combining a stay at a historic quinta, a boat trip along the river and a tasting with one of the great Port producers is one of the most memorable experiences available anywhere in Portugal.

  • US, UK, Canadian and Australian passport holders do not require a visa for stays of up to 90 days in Portugal as a Schengen area country. We always confirm the latest entry requirements for your specific passport before travel.

  • Portugal pairs naturally with Spain for a broader Iberian journey and with Morocco for those who want to cross into North Africa and experience the shared history of the two cultures from both sides of the Strait of Gibraltar. We design all multi-country itineraries as fully private and tailor-made.

  • Portugal has one of the strongest luxury travel infrastructures in Europe, with a remarkable collection of boutique hotels, historic pousadas, wine estates and private villas. It also remains genuinely warm and welcoming in a way that more heavily touristed destinations often no longer are. Private experiences here, from a tasting at a centuries-old Port house to a private sailing trip along the Algarve coast, feel exclusive without feeling staged.

  • Portugal and Spain are neighbouring countries with very different characters. Portugal is quieter, more intimate and in many ways more authentic, with less of the mass tourism that has transformed parts of Spain. Its food culture is extraordinarily rich and underappreciated internationally. Its cities move at a gentler pace. For travellers who have already experienced Spain and want something that feels like a genuine discovery, Portugal consistently exceeds expectations. For those who want both, a combined Iberian itinerary is one of the most rewarding journeys we design.
